Wearable Drones: The Future of Fashion-Tech?

If, as many fashion-tech pundits are predicting, we’re going to embrace wearable technology in the near future, then it’s going to have to look good.

Business of Fashion recently reported on several wearable tech ideas developed at Frog Design Inc. that, though years from actualisation, promise to significantly enhance our lives.

A floating propeller that spins so quickly above your head it keeps you dry when it’s raining, a hockey-puck shaped machine that hovers in front of your face and filters polluted air, a levitating disc that guides you to your destination when you’re lost: is there really going to be a demand for these?

Well, the levitating disc for when you’re lost, I’ll give you that. That’s a great idea. But the others, I’m just not sure that they will ever take off (literally).

The whole thing comes back to what people are comfortable wearing, and the reasons people choose to wear certain things at all.

People express themselves with their choices of clothing and accessories. Fashion-tech will have to be, not only functional, but also capable of accommodating people’s creativity and style preferences.

Apple, for example, are going to great lengths to ensure that the Apple Watch is sold as a fashion item as well as a piece of technology.

The company has consulted fashion designers extensively throughout the item’s design process.

And even so, some are saying that the biggest tech company in the world is still worried that the product won’t be a success

I’m just not sure how you can customise a floating fan, or a hockey-puck drone.

Do you think fashion-tech will take off? And what ideas would you like to see? Email us your thoughts.
